BOSTON – Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has been honored with an Institutional Leadership Award from MassEcon, a private, non-profit partnership of business, industry leaders, and government dedicated to fostering economic growth in the Commonwealth.

The award will be presented at a Nov. 24 luncheon that will also recognize 17 other companies from across the state. The Sixth Annual Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Award is the only event of its kind in Massachusetts recognizing companies for their outstanding contributions to the Massachusetts economy.

BIDMC will be cited for its hospital-wide effort earlier this year to prevent 500 layoffs by enacting a wage freeze that spared the lowest-earning employees.

The winning companies were selected after a reception with their competitors and judges where representatives from the companies to present their attributes in the categories of job growth, facility expansion, investment and community involvement since Jan. 1, 2008.

“As an international hub of higher education institutions,” said Jack M. Wilson, President of the University of Massachusetts, “Massachusetts will provide a well-trained workforce and generate new technologies for these expanding businesses for many years to come.”

Jerry Sargent, Executive Vice President of Citizens Bank and MassEcon Chair concurred. “The Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Awards allows us to honor companies not only at a state level, but those that are making waves worldwide. These honorees are strengthening the foundation of the state’s economy.”

In addition to the Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners from the regions, MassEcon will also confer three unique awards: the Statewide Strategic Asset Award to MassDevelopment for providing financial tools needed to stimulate economic growth across the Commonwealth; the Innovator's Award to Zipcar for addressing the challenges of urban travel; and the Institutional Leadership Award to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for its hospital-wide effort to prevent 500 layoffs and enact a wage freeze that spared the lowest-earning employees.

“Massachusetts has great stories to tell, and we appreciate MassEcon’s role in getting the word out” noted Greg Bialecki Secretary for Housing & Economic Development. “The Team Massachusetts award winners demonstrate the innovative and entrepreneurial nature of the Commonwealth and the strength of its diverse regions.”

Susan Houston, Executive Director of MassEcon, observed that the process of selecting the winners was extremely difficult. “All the companies nominated enhance the Massachusetts economy, and the judges did not arrive at their decision lightly. We’re proud to be able to recognize them for their contributions.”
