Paths in Research

Many residents have a potential interest in research and understand that knowledge about research may be important for fellowship application, but have little personal experience in research and many questions about it. What is the personal life of a physician-scientist like, and how do people in real life reconcile the demands and rewards of research, patient care, teaching, and family life? How does a resident launch a career in research? How does the preparation for a career in bench research differ from preparing for translational or clinical research careers? What is patient-based clinical research, and how does it differ from population-based clinical research differ?

The Paths in Research sessions are monthly informal dinners in which residents are invited to join members of the research faculty of the Department of Medicine and hear about their personal research careers - how they got to where they are in their careers and how they fit their research and clinical careers into their personal and family lives. By showcasing a variety of faculty - younger and older, clinical, translational and bench investigators, men and women - we hope to show residents a range of role models, who illustrate that there are many paths to a research career.
