Interventional Cardiology Fellowship
Interventional Heart Care
BIDMC offers state-of-the-art catheterbased treatment for patients with coronary disease in the highest-volume program in New England, performing more than 5,000 catheterizations and 2,400 interventional procedures annually. Its staff members continue to play a major role in the pre-clinical and clinical development and evaluation of cutting-edge technologies for the treatment of complex cardiovascular disorders. Many interventional patients are enrolled in clinical trials providing access to investigational treatments including drug-eluting stents and embolic protection devices.
Interventional procedures performed at BIDMC include: complex conventional angioplasty; coronary atherectomy;coronary stent placement; directional and rotational atherectomy; intravascular ultrasound; endomyocardial biopsy; balloon aortic and mitral valvuloplasty; and peripheral procedures.
The cardiac catheterization suite includes five catheterization laboratories and features state-of-the-art digital imaging for enhanced resolution with lower radiation. The equipment enables cardiologists to fax preliminary finidngs and recommendations to referring physicians within minutes of competing each case. BIDMC staff recently authored a study in Circulation demonstrating that continuing antiplatelet therapy after placement of drug-eluting stents is crucial to prevent stent thrombosis.
