Trauma Surgery and Critical Care

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is a Level 1 Trauma Center. The Trauma Center is a leader in the treatment and care of injured adults. The program has earned Level 1 Trauma Center verification from the American College of Surgeons, indicating that we are able to treat the highest severity of adult injuries. The Trauma service admits more than 1, 600 patients annually.

The Trauma Center takes a multi-disciplinary approach to trauma care including specialists in General Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiology, Anesthesia, Social Work and Physical Therapy. These specialty areas work together in the Berenson Emergency Department and the Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Unit to provide leading edge trauma care. The Trauma service is also comprised of a dedicated nurse practitioner that directs post-operative and other trauma care.

The Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Unit provides a comprehensive tertiary level of ICU care. This service, which integrates surgery and anesthesia critical care, provides state-of-the-art care for patients with postoperative cardiac and respiratory collapse, and coordinates multilevel care for patients with trauma and multi-organ failure.
