What patients are saying about BID-Needham
"I am writing this letter, in gratitude, to inform you that Dr. Schwartzman [in Hospital Medicine], your staff, and your policies recently made a horribly difficult situation manageable. My mother...suddenly became ill... She had spent many hours in the ER at BID-N and her diagnosis was inconclusive... My daughter and I, her health care proxies, were unsure of the care we should select.
When she was sent to a bed on the floor, her doctor, Dr Schwartzman, spent a good amount of time explaining the various treatments we could elect. When we decided on Comfort Care [what a wonderful term for us to hear when we were so worried that my mother would spend her last days in pain and discomfort], we were relieved. The doctor could not have been kinder, the nurses were all so caring, there was even a food cart set up for us outside her room – I really cannot imagine anything else that you could have done to help us with the terrible decision and reality of the moment.
Early the next morning, another doctor called to tell me that my mother had just died, in no pain, with a nurse by her side, and to express his condolences. The entire staff could not have been more sensitive... My daughter and I each received calls from Dr. Schwartzman an hour after my mother died to express his condolences and ask if we had any questions, then, a few days later, I received a sympathy card from the Staff and Caregivers.
Now that I can reflect on the entire experience, I realize that I must share with you how grateful and appreciative my family is for the excellent guidance and thoughtfulness of Dr. Schwartzman and the kindness and capability of the nurses and staff. This was a true example of excellent care, recognizing the health of the patient and the concerns of the patient’s family. Thank you for that excellence."
Eileen M. Feldman, Needham, MA
"I had to go by ambulance to the Emergency Room... I had to let you know, they were wonderful! I had a lot of anxiety going on, along with a lot of pain and they helped with both. I would recommend Beth Israel not only Boston but Needham to anyone. Keep up your good work."
Nancy Piantedos (March 2013)
"We think the emergency department staff and services are outstanding. They never seem too rushed to listen and advise their patients. They are top-notch! I felt so secure at BID. They always answered my call quickly and happily. We are so happy to have a nursing staff like them in Needham. I wish I could thank each one personally, by name. They are great!"
Marion Dauwer, Needham, MA
"I just called the Cardiovascular Institute to make an appointment and once again, I was struck but the unfailing friendliness and helpfulness of every single person I have ever met at BIDMC Needham. I've been to the Cardiovascular Center, the Joslin Office, the Sleep Studies unit, and I have never met anyone who wasn't friendly and helpful. From the people who greet you at the door to the registrars to the secretaries, the nurses, and the doctors-EVERYONE is so supportive and nice. As you can imagine, it is sometimes very stressful, going to the doctor, but I never leave BIDMC Needham without feeling anything but fully cared for and respected.
I request that you let your CEO or whoever know that you have a wonderful, wonderful staff at the hospital, people who make a huge difference in their patients' lives, in a thousand tiny ways. I am very grateful."
Wendy Hanawalt, North Easton, MA
"The nurses and Dr. Cohen [in the Endoscopy Unit] inspire confidence and are to be commended on their skill, efficiency, and kindness."
Catherine Burgess, Norwood, MA
"The whole day surgery staff was just wonderful. When I was in recovery, instead of the saltines, they actually had warm muffins. I felt like I was visiting with friends. There was a lot of warmth, patience, and kindness from the staff."
Rebecca Rubin, Sharon, MA
"My surgeon, Dr. Michael Corbett, is great. He is not only an incredibly knowledgeable surgeon, but a kind and caring person. The nursing staff and anesthesiologist share the same wonderful qualities."
Rhonda L. Bohn, Waban, MA
"This is a fan letter about Dermot [Lahey, RN, in the Emergency Department]. He is a credit to his profession and I marveled at his ability to anticipate what procedure was going to take place next and then be prepared before it actually happened."
Joseph Perkins, Newton, MA
"…the care that I received on July 21 in the medical day department at the BI in Needham was stellar!"
Kathy Mercuri, Waltham, MA
