Risk Factors

Risk factors for developing tachycardia include:

  • Heart disease, especially prior heart attack
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Cardiomyopathy (damaged heart muscle)
  • Electrolyte abnormalities such as too much or too little calcium, sodium, magnesium or potassium in the blood
  • Damaged heart valves
  • High blood pressure
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Sleep apnea
  • Family history of arrhythmias or heart disease
  • Older age
