History

Founded in 1916, The Beth Israel Hospital has a long commitment of providing medical care to immigrants. Long before Massachusetts created “free care” Beth Israel hospital was providing charity care to immigrants, who, initially, were Russian and Eastern European émigrés. Dr. Mitchell Rabkin, who became president of the hospital in 1966 supported the integration of interpreters into medical care to further enhance patient care.
