Innovations

Advancing GI Interventional Care

In the BIDMC Center for Advanced Endoscopy, our gastroenterologists are involved in the development of novel endoscopic technologies and protocols to help manage a large variety of gastrointestinal diseases.

Pioneers in Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and Barretts Esophagus

Ram Chuttani, M.D., and Douglas Pleskow, M.D., internationally acknowledged leaders in endoscopy, are pioneering innovative treatments for gastroesophageal reflux disease and Barretts esophagus, a pre-cancerous condition of the esophagus. Their endoscopic PlicatorĀ® procedure offered superb control of GERD in properly selected patients. They are currently pioneering novel endoscopic procedures for Barretts esophagus. These include narrow band imaging and confocal microscopy for early diagnosis of dysplasia/cancer and BARRx radiofrequency ablation and Cryotherapy for treatment.

Cancer Therapies

Novel enteral stent procedures help manage malignant gastric outlet obstruction and malignant colonic obstruction. Our Advanced Endoscopy team works closely with medical and surgical oncologists to provide care to patients with gastrointestinal cancers.

Barrett's esophagus

BIDMC was also the first in New England to offer BARRx therapy for Barrett's esophagus, a cutting-edge approach using radiofrequency ablation against pre-cancerous mucosa. The Center for Advanced Endoscopy also offer cryotherapy and endomucosal resection techniques for the treatment of Barrett's with high-grade dysplasia and esophageal cancer.

Pancreatocobiliary diseases

BIDMC has long been at the forefront of endoscopic management of pancreatocobiliary diseases, ranging from biliary stones and bile duct strictures, to chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. For patients with pancreatic conditions, there is robust collaboration between physicians in the Center for Advanced Endoscopy, and BIDMC's renowned medical pancreatologists and pancreas surgeons, with whom we provide comprehensive care to every patient using a team-centered approach. We also collaborate extensively with the world-class Liver Center at Beth Israel Deaconess, to care for patients with complex biliary disorders, and for patients before and after liver transplantation.

Safety

Physicians at the Center for Advanced Endoscopy at BIDMC are committed to providing the highest quality and safest care for our patients. A major part of our commitment is our ongoing research in quality and safety in advanced endoscopy. Our anesthesiology team has particular expertise in advanced methods for safe endoscopic sedation, and our gastroenterologists and anesthesiologists have published and presented widely on patient safety and quality measures.
