A Healthy Start

Bowdoin Street Health Center staff kicked off the New Year with a healthy start. The group, “Strategies for Healthy Eating and Weight Management” met on Mondays in January and February during lunch. The group was lead by Bowdoin’s own nutritionist Melissa Moore-Boyle, MS, RD, LDN and averaged about five to eight staff members in attendance each week.
Topics discussed included reading and understanding nutrition labels, ideas for healthy snacks, healthy substitutions for high calorie/high fat ingredients and much more. Melissa made an effort to touch base with participants weekly to address concerns and explore new ideas for challenges. She issued homework assignments such as bringing in food menus from favorite restaurants to keeping a daily log of foods that are eaten. This initiative challenged staff to live up to what the health center teaches and encourages the community to embrace, a healthy lifestyle.
The health center has several initiatives in place and upcoming around physical activity and healthy eating. We hope that by reading about our efforts you too will begin to make positive healthy lifestyle changes.
