Brian O'Hara could be considered the ideal patient. Labeling himself a "preventive maintenance type of person," Brian was always on time when it came to scheduling his routine doctors' appointments. So, when Brian turned 50, one of the first things he did was schedule a colonoscopy.
Brian decided to come to the Digestive Disease Center at BIDMC, a comprehensive and innovative center where gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, pathologists and other specialists collaborate to provide the best care possible for gastrointestinal disorders and diseases.
Having experienced no health issues or symptoms, Brian was shocked when doctors found a large polyp in his colon. Thankfully, the polyp proved to be just that - a non-cancerous mass. But if not discovered, polyps can turn into cancer as they continue to grow inside the body.
The doctors easily removed the polyp and Brian is thankful that it was caught in time. Because he followed "doctors' orders" and got a colonoscopy at the right age, Brian feels at ease knowing that the only thing he has to worry about now is getting in enough play time with his dog Gracie.
Brian urges everyone over 50 to get a colonoscopy. Calling it "quick and easy," Brian knows that colonoscopy not only saved his life, but can save others.
