More Pink Idiocy

I probably owe you an apology for being so stuck on the ridiculousness of some October Pink efforts. In truth, I think the way that I manage my intense feelings about the month is by watching for some of these idiocies and then making fun of them. Back in the day, it did make some sense to generate breast cancer awareness. In 2013, almost 2014, those days seems long gone. If anything, American women greatly over estimate their risk of developing breast cancer, and absolutely everyone is aware.

As the focus has gradually shifted to PR and marketing and making money and jumping on the bright pink bandwagon, things have gone from the ridiculous to the sublime. I shared the pink tow trucks a few days ago; this is a delightful essay from Cure Today about some other attempts to Go Pink. Here is the start and a link. Enjoy.

Finally, someone said "enough." The National Football League conceded this week that there can actually be too much of a good thing. In this case, it's pink. The NFL's breast cancer awareness initiative includes pink "cleats, wristbands, gloves, sideline hats, helmet decals, captains' patches, chin cups, shoe laces, skull caps, sideline towels, eye shield decals and quarterback towels," as well as coins, socks, equipment and even goalpost padding. But when the league tried to introduce pink penalty flags, it turned out to be the final straw. (Read more about it here.)
