About the BreastCare Center

You have many choices about where to go for breast care, whether for routine screenings or diagnostic procedures, specialized services or treatments. You may also have options about the type of treatment and care you are considering. Here is why choosing our BreastCare Center would be a good decision for your health.

First Boston Academic Medical Center to Earn Accreditation

NAPBC Gold CircleThe BreastCare Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is the first breast health program at a Boston academic medical center to achieve special accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). We actually requested to undergo this extensive evaluation to ensure we meet the highest standards possible.

In addition to receiving the accreditation, we earned a perfect score, meeting or exceeding all 27 standards set by this prestigious medical group.

We are proud of our perfect score and believe our patients and their families benefit from the highest quality service delivered by some of the premiere breast specialists in the world.

Our BreastCare Center Specialists

We place great emphasis on the unique needs of every patient who comes to the BreastCare Center. Assessing and treating benign breast concerns, in addition to breast cancer, everyone on our team — from doctors and nurses to nurse practitioners and social workers — is highly accessible to patients and families. We are here to address all questions, fears and concerns.specialists reviewing diagnostic mammogram

Our specialists collaborate with each other to reach agreement on the best treatment options, and involve you and your family in all decisions about your care. From the first meeting with your medical team, your coordinated breast health care becomes our journey together.

Routine and Diagnostic Evaluations and Procedures

Our dedicated Breast Imaging unit gives BreastCare Center patients access to the very latest diagnostic technology for both routine and complex procedures.mammogram

We offer routine and diagnostic mammogram services in many convenient locations throughout the Greater Boston area; some with evening, weekend, and walk-in appointments. Our Breast Imaging specialists also perform a full range of additional screenings:

Genetic Testing and Innovative Cancer Treatment

Focused on the hereditary risk of breast and related cancers, our specialized genetic counselors will work closely with you to examine your family history and determine if you are a candidate for testing. A genetic counselor will thoroughly explain in advance what your options could be — to reduce your chances of developing breast or related cancers — if you are found to be a risk-associated gene carrier.

Our patients also have access to the clinical genetic studies currently underway. This means the most up-to-date information and innovative treatments for all patients.

Breast cancer patients may have the opportunity to take part in clinical research trials as well. Trials are conducted by BIDMC through our partnership with the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center.

Compassionate Care and Support

The BreastCare Center manages the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient. Along with day-to-day and long-term care and support, we offer patients access to BIDMC’s extensive network of support services to help them through the emotional challenges of being diagnosed with cancer, their treatment and beyond:

  • Many support groups dedicated to women diagnosed with breast cancer, including a survivorship program, an online group, and a peer program designed to meet the needs of patients and their families at all stages of cancer.
  • Windows of Hope, a specialty shop providing products and services specifically for cancer patients.
  • Living with Cancer, a blog written by Hester Hill Schnipper, Manager of Oncology Social Work at BIDMC. Twice diagnosed with breast cancer, she offers her personal insights on the disease, support, and the latest news and research.
