Hospital and Physician Practice Affiliations

In the pursuit of clinical and research excellence, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has formed partnerships with outstanding hospitals and physician practice groups in eastern Massachusetts. These partnerships with community hospitals, physicians, and community-based practices provide high quality care close to home, with easy access to specialty care downtown when appropriate.

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton (BID-Milton) - Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton, formerly Milton Hospital, is an 87-bed independently licensed hospital with general medical and surgical inpatient care, 24-hour emergency services in the newly renovated and expanded Emergency Department, and a complete complement of outpatient health services. Physicians from BIDMC and BID-Milton collaborate on a variety of clinical services including emergency medicine, hospital services (hospitalists), cardiovascular health, orthopaedics, gynecology, prostate health and geriatrics. Both institutions provide seamless integration for patient care through a shared electronic medical information system.

BID-Milton, conveniently located just off Route 28 in Milton, is dedicated to caring for people of all ages in Milton, Randolph, Quincy, Braintree, Canton, Dorchester, Mattapan, Hyde Park and other surrounding communities.

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham (BID-Needham) is a 58-bed independently licensed acute care hospital in Needham. BID-Needham and BIDMC staff and resources are integrated in multiple clinical areas such as hospital services (hospitalists), cardiology, radiology, general surgery, oncology and pathology. A shared electronic medical records system means that physicians from both institutions can easily access and compare patient information and notes.

The new South Wing, which opened in 2010, added 37,000 square feet to the original hospital. It includes a state-of-the-art Emergency Department (ED), 20 private inpatient rooms, and a new MRI suite. The ED, which is staffed by Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians from BIDMC, has 19 private treatment rooms-including designated pediatric treatment areas and a separate pediatric waiting room-and a double ambulance bay with direct access to a fully equipped trauma room.

BIDMC and BID-Needham are building a new, state-of-the-art comprehensive cancer center and surgery pavilion on the campus of BID-Needham, slated to open in the spring of 2014. The new building will consolidate cancer care formerly offered in Waltham with the existing cancer services already offered at BID-Needham. The third floor of the three-story building will allow for the expansion of surgical programs and related services.

Anna Jaques Hospital - Anna Jaques Hospital (AJH) is a 123-bed community hospital serving 17 cities and towns in the Merrimack Valley. The hospital offers a wide range of acute care services to meet the needs of a growing patient population, including inpatient and outpatient surgery in digital operating room suites; a full range of cardiology testing; and a Birth Center with OB/GYN, midwifery, and neonatology. Clinically affiliated with BIDMC since 2010, BIDMC and AJH share a relationship in multiple clinical areas, including the Emergency Department, neurology, vascular surgery and maternal-fetal medicine. This means that AJH patients have easy access to BIDMC's Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital specialists. A shared electronic medical records system means that physicians from both institutions can easily access and compare patient information and notes.

Lawrence General Hospital - Lawrence General Hospital is a 189-bed community hospital serving patients in the greater Lawrence, Andover, Methuen and Merrimack Valley region. Lawrence General's affiliation with BIDMC enhances clinical programs in the Merrimack Valley; increases local access to all specialties of a Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital; and improves coordination of care through an integrated electronic medical record system. Joint clinical programs include cardiovascular, endocrinology and diabetes care, with others planned in the near future. These programs use resources from both institutions to bring new and expanded high quality services to the region.

Commonwealth Hematology-Oncology, PC (CHO) - BIDMC's partnership with CHO, the largest community-based private cancer practice in New England, allows us to offer patients a choice of more than 75 physicians in 15 locations. Patients receive the best care locally in their communities, and access to the world-class specialists at BIDMC's Cancer Center when needed. The affiliation also gives CHO patients more treatment options than ever before with access to a multitude of clinical trials in which BIDMC participates. Learn more about our partnership.

Community Care Alliance, LLC - The medical center has seven affiliated health centers called the Community Care Alliance:

  • Bowdoin Street Health Center (owned by BIDMC)
  • The Dimock Center
  • Fenway Community Health
  • Joseph M. Smith Community Health Center
  • Outer Cape Health Services
  • Sidney Borum Jr. Health Center
  • South Cove Community Health Center

Together, the centers operate 19 sites throughout Boston, Waltham, Quincy, and Cape Cod. Each year, BIDMC provides financial support to the health centers to maximize the scale and scope of community-based primary care, health education and social services. By sharing resources and expertise, we are able to create effective, culturally responsive programs and initiatives to enhance the health and well-being of underserved communities.

Atrius Health - Atrius Health, the state's largest independent physicians group, and BIDMC formed an affiliation in 2010, aimed at improving collaboration between the referring physicians and the hospital. The two organizations are joined together by a common philosophy of patient care, integrated information technology, and a shared view of health care reform. Atrius Health is an alliance of five community-based medical groups: Dedham Medical Associates, Granite Medical, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, South Shore Medical Center, and Southboro Medical Group.

Hebrew Rehabilitation Center - Hebrew Rehabilitation Center (HRC), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, provides an array of health care services for seniors at locations in Boston and Dedham, including long-term care, post-acute care, adult day health, and outpatient services. HRC is BIDMC’s preferred provider of post-acute services for seniors and as part of this clinical affiliation, HRC and BIDMC focus on programs to improve communications when patients are transferred between facilities, ensuring clarity about each patient’s clinical status and a seamless transition of care plan. Also, Lewis Lipsitz, MD, serves the dual role as Chief of the Division of Gerontology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Vice President, Academic Medicine and Director of the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew Senior Life, the parent organization of HRC.
